If you would like to go back to trace the beginnings of the guitar and guitar tabs, you would have to begin in Europe. More specifically, you would begin in Portugal. The Portuguese word for guitar is "guitarra", which is derived from the Greek kythara (cithara to Latins later on).

Where did the Greek name come from? Here, there are points of difference because not everyone agrees as to where the name comes from. One theory of many states that the word kythara came from an ancient Greek island called Cerigo. This island was a supposed paradise, which flourished with poetry, love and a Venus temple. Another theory states that the word comes from a mountain that is located between Attica and Boeotia.
